APO’s Community Support Program (CSP) provides more than $300,000 a year in donations and partnerships to eligible community groups, organisations and initiatives in the Whitsunday Regional Council communities of Bowen and Collinsville.

Since 2017, APO’s CSP has provided these community groups approximately $1.98million.

With a focus on education, health, community wellbeing and youth opportunities, the program draws on annual consultation with community stakeholders to determine issues, challenges and priorities.

APO General Manager – Port Operations Allan Brown explained the importance of the consultation process.

“Each year we meet representatives of local groups to determine how our contribution can make the most impact,” Mr Brown said.

“We want to work with schools, health agencies and community associations who are directly supporting our fellow community members through their daily work.

“Our mission is to ‘Grow Local’ by employing locals; by purchasing from local businesses and our CSP investment is an extension of this commitment to grow the sustainability of the local region.

“This includes building capacity in our local groups by supporting projects to assist them further fundraise and support themselves into the future.

Some of the causes supported by the CSP since 2017 include:

  • Continued funding support for the Youth Coordinator at the Bowen PCYC
  • Extension of the Guidance Officer and Community Support Officer roles across Collinsville Schools
  • Contributions to the Bowen Neighbourhood Centre for a new community food bank
  • Donation of giftcards to Ideal Placements to help upskill locals
  • Provision of back to school supplies (books, stationery and uniforms) for families in need in partnership with Bowen Neighbourhood Centre and local schools.

Michelle O’Regan, Bowen PCYC

PCYC Bowen is proud of the long-term partnership with Abbot Point Operations. APO has supported PCYC Bowen’s Youth and Community Development Programs for the past 8 years. Their support has seen PCYC Bowen able to provide ongoing youth development through the award-winning Youth Management Team, R.U.B.Y (Representing and Uniting Bowen Youth) Crew. This group of inspirational young people regularly volunteer in community, often seen running Friday night skating for families and children. APO has also supported PCYC through our individual and group programs such as the Primary School Engagement Program and the WORKFit Program. The collaboration with APO enables PCYC Bowen to empower our community through youth development and we are grateful for their ongoing support.
