Students encouraged to 'Grow Local with APO' at Careers Expo

8 August 2022

Abbot Point Operations (APO) was on hand at the recent Proserpine Careers Expo to tell local high school students how they could stay in the region and enjoy a fulfilling, well-paid career.

APO Health, Safety, Environment and Community Manager Kate Mee said the APO team enjoyed telling young people about technical, operational, maintenance, and administrative at the port.

“Our team of 380 local employees and contractors help mines across Central Queensland to safely and efficiently export their coal to the world,” Ms Mee said.

“There are so many interesting jobs involved in unloading trains and loading ships, maintaining our equipment and looking after our beautiful natural environment both the sea, the bush that surrounds the terminal and the nearby wetlands.

“What we do helps generates revenue for governments to pay for services like nurses, roads and hospitals, it also benefits people overseas who use the energy made from Australian coal to improve their lives.

“It takes a diverse range of skills to perform this task as efficiently and safely as we do.

“Our people hold trade qualifications, diplomas, and university degrees, so the opportunity to join our team exists no matter your preferred training or study pathway.”

Ms Mee said APO was proud of its track record of helping its people improve their skills and excel in their chosen career or trade.

“We have a world-class apprenticeship program that has been training local tradies for generations.

“If you have a strong work ethic, a determination to learn, and a desire to be an active member of a team then we have the environment, systems and people to succeed, and we’d love to hear from you.”
